A wonderful combination of music combined at WSU Kingswood campus on the 10th and 11th of August. 'The Creativity Unlimited Festival' showcased multiple cultures of music through an extensive list of international and national artists along with a mix of professional and student performances.
We plan to begin our recordings sessions on the 17th of August. fortunately, the festival was prior to this date as it gave me many new ideas about how to approach the project in terms of, collaboration, creativity, and technological practicalities. Four performances, in particular, sparked my interest in terms of relevance to my project; Hyelim Kim's collaborations, HSC Performer Competition, Kyle, and Alessandro duo performance and the 3rd Year iPhone Performance.
As I mentioned these performances are all relevant in their own way. I was inspired by the expression of collaboration culturally with the fusion of genres and combination of multicultural the performances by Hyelim Kim's WSU staff. From a different perspective, the approach to collaboration by the HSC students parallels with the process I am about to undergo. They are also working with their peers in 'student' rather than professional environment.
The practicalities of the iPhone performance was a perfect example of problem solving and working with technology. As a 3rd year student, I was involved in the iPhone performances and experienced firsthand the unpredictable nature of sound and technology. In the performance, we had issues with reverberation, amplification, and frequencies. The combination of lower quality iPhone speakers, high frequencies, and open outside area resulted in the sounds being barely audible at some stages of the performance. These are variables I’ll need to consider as a producer.
Musically Kyle and Alessandro's performance reflected the instrumentation and style of fused music i would be working with. As I mentioned in the project proposal educating and exposing myself to these instruments and style music is important to understand how it works both technically, culturally and musically in terms of what parameters are significant to the genre. 'The Creativity Unlimited Festival' provided the opportunity to test my knowledge and skills of collaboration, problem solving, culture and tactical practicalities before driving into the major project. This prepared me for a realistic and productive approach.
